Lot 6353
ISLAMIC, Persia (Post-Seljuk). Khwarizm Shahs. 'Ala al-Din Muhammad II, AH 596-617 / AD 1200-1220. Jital (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.62 g, 7 h), siege issue, struck under the 'Malik of Kurzuwan', Kurzuwan, Rabi II AH 618 = June AH 1221. Album 1971. An unusually complete example with attractive earthen highlights. Some deposits, otherwise, very fine.

From an American collection.

The identity of the 'Malik of Kurzuwan' ('King of Kurzuwan' in Arabic) is shrouded in mystery. We will probably never know who lead the defence of Kurzuwan in the two months in the summer of AH 618 until Genghis Khan conquered and annihilated the city.
